The Nationalist Party told us that they have enough tourists and that they do not need naturist beaches. In 25 years nothing was really done to help our cause!

This Labour government was very quick to announce 'DOG FRIENDLY' beaches (
http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20130810/local/dog-friendly-beaches-announced.481553) even if it was not on their electoral manifesto, so we are hoping that 'NATURIST FRIENDLY' beaches would become available too! After all humans are more important than dogs? Are they?

  1.
    NATURISM AS A CIVIL LIBERTY

Is naturism a civil right? A Civil Liberty can be defined as a duty not to infringe on the rights of others in their pursuit of life, liberty and happiness. Non sexual nudity as such is a right as history shows us that it was accepted for thousands of years and it was various taboos and stigmas that gave it a bad image.

For example, Queen Victoria placed a high value on her idea of moral propriety. It was at this point that it became quite unacceptable to be seen in public unclothed, regardless of the reason. This influenced missionaries to distribute clothing to primitive peoples living in tropical climates where clothing was both unnecessary and impractical. After the queen's death in 1901, nudism began to emerge in northern Germany. It gradually spread elsewhere.

One can argue then that since a few influential persons gave naturism various stigmas, one at present is entitled not to have these taboos infringe on his/her right for naturism. If one is entitled to believe that social nudity is wrong then on the other hand one is entitled to believe and practice naturism as a way of life.

The Maltese authorities have NO RIGHT to infringe on naturists right to practice this lifestyle. Moreover this infringement is due to fear of losing votes, lack of information and old stupid laws that need to be updated urgently. Citizens should not be made responsible for a government's inadequacy!

Through a referendum Malta joined the EU believing in European civil rights, culture and economic benefits. The irony is that all of Europe embraces naturism as a choice. Malta thus is not only denying Maltese naturist to practice this belief but also denying this right to the millions of tourists that visit our island every year.

We believe that the right to practice naturism should be available in all EU countries.

ARE DOGS MORE IMPORTANT THAN HUMANS? The government has designated a number of bays as being ‘dog friendly’. This is at a time where we have no beaches that are 'nudist friendly'! Go figure it out!!!

Naturists in Malta are sometimes risking their lives to go to secluded beaches because there are no 'nudist friendly' beaches and many secluded spots currently used for unofficial nude bathing have dangerous accesses. It is not the first time that people are hurt accessing such places.

The irony and parody of the Maltese government is that its happy to make some beaches 'dog friendly' yet it continues to deny (even after several polls indicate that many citizens support the legalization of naturist beaches) Maltese and tourists alike the option for 'nudist friendly' beaches.

We urge our members and supporters to write to newspapers and politicians about this issue.

AN ESTIMATE INTO THE EXTRA INCOME FROM TOURISM IF SOME NUDIST RESORTS AND PUBLIC NATURIST BEACHES ARE ESTABLISHED.

Croatia generates approximately 15% to 20% of its income from tourism through nudist tourists alone (http://www.naturistholiday.info/a/1011/The_Top_Five_Naturist_Destinations_in_Europe.aspx) Given that Malta has a warmer climate than Croatia if not nicer beaches, we can generate similar figures here. A conservative 10% extra tourists for Malta mean that we could attract at least 150,000 more tourists pa. However if Malta advertised itself as an alternative Mediterranean nudist destination this figure will indeed be much higher. This would result in extra income for all of us! Even if one takes Muslim Turkey, this country has already established a foreigner only nudist hotel (http://www.independent.co.uk/travel/news-and-advice/turkey-gets-first-nudist-hotel-1954573.html) and has several unofficial nude beaches. In just one naturist zone, Spain has over 2,000 apartments & a 4 star hotel just for the sole use of nudists! In Cap D'Age, France one can even bank, shop and dine in the nude (http://gofrance.about.com/cs/nudismnaturism/a/capdagde.htm). We see no reason why Malta should shy away from the nudist euro! The times have changed! A relatively short time ago, many people thought that divorce would not be accepted! Today we are thinking of giving more rights to minorities and possibly introduce gay marriage! Nudism has got nothing to do with sex, so why not accept it for the benefit of all?!

MAJOR WIN IN COURT FOR A TOPLESS LAP DANCER!

The analogy that the magistrate brought in his sentence 'that persons entering such clubs knew what they were expecting'(http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20130521/local/lap-dancer-cleared-of-offending-public-morals.470593) could be applied to unofficial nudist beaches too! All of Malta knows where current unofficial nudist spots are so if they go there then they would have known what was expected!

The Maltese Justice Ministry on Nudism in Malta

According to an article by Patrick Cooke entitled 'View from the beach…' and appearing in the Times of Malta of Wednesday, August 1, 2012,the Maltese Justice Ministry had the following to say on nudism in Malta: The Justice Ministry supported taking skinny dippers to court because: “Maltese law does not allow nudism in public places and beaches are considered public places.” The arraignments of tourists in Malta were normally treated quickly. This was to ensure that they could return home on their pre-booked flights, with no extra costs incurred, a ministry spokesman said. When asked if there are any plans to introduce spot fines to replace court cases for such incidents, the spokesman said the government was in the process of reviewing all possible offences and some might eventually be “decriminalised”. “Once this happens, these offences will no longer be dealt with by the criminal courts but by regional tribunals, as is already the case for traffic and certain environmental offences. “Individuals accused of such offences will also be able to settle fines electronically, by post or at one of the local councils’ offices.”
